If you had to rank award-show red carpets based on fashion — which, let’s be honest, is the main reason to watch — the Tonys would probably come in dead last.
So it was no surprise that Vogue impresario Anna Wintour was less than pleased with what she saw on Broadway’s big night in 2014.
“Let me tell you, it was a disaster,” Wintour told fashion critic Suzy Menkes. “How many mermaid fishtail strapless sequin gowns can we see?”
And so the American Theatre Wing chairman William Ivey Long enlisted Wintour to join the Tony team as a fashion consultant this year, as The Post’s theater columnist Michael Riedel first reported. Industry sources told Riedel that Wintour would choose select stars to receive the glamour treatment for Sunday night’s show.
Though Wintour, forever tactful, would never reveal which terribly dressed stars inspired her mission to make the Tonys red carpet more fashionable, we’ve rounded up the women of last year’s affair who hit all the wrong notes.
