The black carpet outside the Tommy Hilfiger show offered up a sense of drama and excitement. But once you made it past the oversized doors and throngs of hangers-on drinking bubbly, there was a whole lot of nada to be excited about. The ultimate Americana designer’s decision to show on 9/11 was ironic, especially considering his show notes reflected a feeling of “renewed optimism in America today.” Nonetheless, the house was full, and the runway was dominated with clothes that will surely sell, but don’t deserve the spotlight of a runway.

His collection had a light and airy feel, as he presented his trademark sportswear in translucent silks and jersey. The highlight was a white and navy striped silk hooded kimono – not only did it look cool floating down the runway, but it translated into something fun and easy to wear.

Hilfiger also played with volume and proportion, but to his disadvantage. An oversized, billowy tunic paired up with a structured blazer and silk wide leg pants looked terrible. If Lily Donaldson can’t make it look good, then what hope is there for us – er – normal people?
