Despite the downpour, the inside of Yigal Azrouel’s show was filled with buzz, flashbulbs and chatty editors. But when the lights fell, the crowd hushed and was treated to a promising kickoff to fashion week. Inspired by the “process of design,” the crafty designer focused on what he does best: drapery, drapery, drapery. It was all over the place, whether it popped up in the sleeves of multi-collar coats, plumed dresses with delicate, gorgeous V-neck backs (which can only be worn by the tall, skinny girls grazing the runways), or simple, sweeping floor length dresses paired with skinny belts. His one major misstep? A suede fish scale dress that would put any girl off her dinner.
