Brooks Brothers, the almost two-century-old clothing maker long known for its conservative suits and oxford shirts, thinks it needs to modernize when it comes to its women’s apparel and is hiring designer and “Project Runway” judge Zac Posen for the job.

Posen, who has designed evening wear for Michelle Obama, Gwyneth Paltrow and Naomi Watts, will serve as creative director for Brooks Brothers’ signature women’s collection and accessories, the company said Friday in a statement. Women’s clothing accounts for about 20 percent of Brooks Brothers’ sales.
