For a larger-than-life assortment of spoons, forks and knives, the Gorham 65-Piece Stainless Steel Flatware Set understood the assignment. It’s no-frills, brushed exterior will never go out of style, either.

Review: “I initially purchased this set in 2013 and purposefully waited for some age prior to reviewing. This has been a very sturdy, high quality set of flatware. It has endured almost daily dishwasher cycles, grandchildren and general abuse. I’ve noticed only very tiny spots of wear on one or two pieces, but otherwise it is still very attractive and looks as good as when first purchased. I must have gotten the set on sale or it has really appreciated in price; admittedly, I paid about $130 less than what is currently advertised, but would readily pay this current price based on the positive experience I’ve had with the style and quality.”

Set includes: 12 dinner knives, 12 dinner forks, 12 salad forks, 12 soup spoons, 12 teaspoons, 1 butter knife, 1 sugar spoon, 1 serving spoon, 1 serving fork.

All pieces have a good weight and feel to them, and the hollow-handled knife is impressive in length and weight. I’m very happy with the quality of this purchase and enjoy using them every day. My only regret is that I didn’t buy them years ago.”

Review: “I’ve been looking for a silverware pattern for quite a few years. I guess I am picky, wanting something simple for everyday, functional for different menus and elegant enough to use for guests. This set met all the criteria. The knife is serrated and lays nicely balanced in the hand. The fork’s prongs are [not] too long. The spoon is an ample size, but not too big. I purchased an additional set of four, so that I had service for 12 [people]. The serving pieces are nice, even though I tend to not use them as often. I especially like the contrast between shiny and brushed. I would recommend this [set] for any household.”

Meal time should feel special and that’s exactly how it feels whenever we’re eating with the dinnerware and flatware from Fable. We’re really gaga about this brand and can you blame us? Look at how handsome this flatware set is. It’s available in four different finishes, but we like it best in gold matte (shown above). Made of 18/10 stainless steel, the 20-Piece set is durable, luxe and instantly dresses up your table. Are they cheap? Nope! However, the extra cost will save you the disappointment from broken or bent handles a few months down the line. Priceless in our book! (Related:Best dinnerware sets of 2023)

Review: “If you’re looking for a serious quality flatware set, this is for you. Beautiful finish. They feel super solid but aren’t bulky. You won’t be bending these spoons in the ice cream container — trust me.”

Cons:

  • Hand wash recommended

We love how different this flatware looks. It’s minimal, modern and filled with personality. It’s also rust-resistant, so it should stay in tiptop shape even if you’re bad about drying your silverware. It comes in several other finishes, including rose gold, so if you’re not into the matte black option (shown above) you still have options. Although we don’t like that there’s no mention of what type of stainless steel the set is made from, its cool aesthetic is enough for us to give it an invite to our next dinner party.

Buyer’s Guide: Choosing your perfect flatware

Looking to upgrade your flatware but feeling overwhelmed by all the choices? Whether you’re starting fresh or replacing worn-out pieces, choosing the right flatware is about balancing quality, style, and budget. Here’s everything you need to know to make a smart choice.

Materials that matter

Stainless steel is your best bet for everyday use, with three main grades:

  • 18/10: Top-tier option with excellent durability and shine
  • 18/8: Great middle-ground choice with good rust resistance
  • 18/0: Budget-friendly and magnetic, but less resistant to corrosion

Set sizes to consider

Standard flatware sets come in three main configurations:

  • 20-piece sets: Service for 4
  • 45-piece sets: Service for 8, plus serving pieces
  • 65-piece sets: Service for 12, plus serving pieces

Design and weight

The weight of your flatware affects both durability and dining experience:

  • Forged: Most durable, made from a single piece of steel
  • Extra-heavy: Premium feel, perfect for fine dining
  • Heavy: Good balance of durability and style
  • Medium: Economical choice for casual dining

Maintenance made simple

Keep your flatware looking great with these tips:

  • Pre-soak to prevent staining
  • Avoid overloading the dishwasher
  • Store different materials separately
  • Dry immediately after washing to prevent water spots

Price points

Plan your budget around these general guidelines:

  • Individual pieces: $2-6 each
  • Quality place settings: $20-45 per setting
  • Complete sets: $20-180, depending on size and quality

Remember: The sweet spot for good quality stainless steel is between $20-45 per place setting — this gets you better materials and improved craftsmanship without breaking the bank

FAQs

Who makes the best flatware sets?

There’s no shortage of brands with flatware to choose from, which can make finding the perfect set for your needs daunting. If you’re trying to save money, there are dozens of affordable picks (we suggest checking out the sets available on Amazon), but if you need something to last for years, there are several brands to look into.

Lenox is one of them. It makes amazing cutlery that is not only sturdy but dishwasher-friendly, featuring an elegance that many admire. The company was founded in 1889, a time we dare say when people really cared about longevity and craftsmanship. If you want high-quality silverware, check them out.

Another brand to know when shopping for flatware is Mikasa. It uses 18/10 stainless steel to make its forks, knives, and spoons, so you can expect that they won’t break or bend. The designs are sophisticated and classic, which we like. It’s not necessarily as eye-catching as some of the more modern designs that are currently popping up. However, traditional looks tend to surpass trends, and we’re all for investing in pieces that don’t go out of style.

How to tell if flatware is good quality?

Wondering if that flatware set is worth the investment? Quality flatware should last for years, even decades, so it’s worth knowing how to spot the good stuff. Here’s what to look for when evaluating flatware quality.

Material Grade

  • Look for 18/10 stainless steel (18% chromium, 10% nickel) for best quality
  • 18/8 is good quality, while 18/0 is lower quality and more prone to corrosion

Physical Qualities

  • Heavier weight indicates better quality
  • Well-balanced in hand
  • Smooth, even finish with no rough spots
  • Polished surfaces without pitting or blemishes

Construction Details

  • Smooth edges on all pieces
  • No rough areas between fork tines
  • Even pattern details without over-buffing
  • Clean, uniform finish throughout

A quality set should feel substantial, look elegant, and be free of manufacturing defects. Again, expect to pay $20-45 per place setting for good quality flatware that will last.

Is 18/0 or 18/10 silverware better?

When shopping for silverware and flatware, you’ve probably noticed references to the numbers 18/0 and 18/10. These numbers represent the chromium and nickel content in the stainless steel. Nickel plays a large role in flatware’s durability, so it’s an important thing to note if you don’t want bendy spoons or broken knives.

Flatware made of 18/0 stainless steel contains 18% chromium and 0% nickel. Because of this, it’s more susceptible to corrosion and won’t last as long as flatware made of 18/10 stainless steel. The pro of it is that it’s cheaper, so if you’re watching your pennies, don’t disregard it.

If you’re ready to invest (or simply don’t like the idea of your spoons being bent out of shape), go for flatware that’s made of 18/10 stainless steel. It’s sturdier and will last far longer than its counterpart.
