Tom Brady — of football fame and an exceedingly particular diet — has long boasted that he’s never eaten a strawberry in his life.

Well, maybe he should think twice. A new study found that just less than a cup of strawberries could help reduce colon inflammation.

Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Amherst studied four groups of mice with inflammatory bowel disease. Three of the mice groups consumed a regular diet, while the fourth group ate a significant portion of whole strawberries — about 3 percent of their diet, or the equivalent of a 3/4 cup daily serving for humans.

They found that the strawberry-eating mice had reduced inflammatory responses in their colons and significantly lower instances of diarrhea and weight loss.

While more research needs to be done to determine strawberries’ effects on humans, the study’s results are in contrast to health gurus, such as Brady and Gwyneth Paltrow, who have derided nightshade produce (red or purple-hued foods) as inflammatory.
