Notorious mega-polluter McDonald’s announced Tuesday it was ditching its confusing McFlurry spoons in favor of a more sustainable design.
The fast-food chain will begin exclusively serving its soft-serve ice cream treats with a slimmer black spoon in an effort to reduce the excessive single-use plastic of its bulky spindles — which bore a baffling resemblance to straws.
“It’s hard to think of a utensil that’s been the focus of more intense debate over the years. Why is the handle hollow? Is it a spoon, a straw, or both?” McDonald’s said in its announcement.
“Starting this month, it’s about to get a sustainable glow-up in the US.”
The original McFlurry spoon has a hollow handle that attaches to McDonald’s ice cream machines to mix the treat before being handed to customers.
By the end of October, hamburger joints across the nation will be equipped with a reusable spindle that can be swapped out and cleaned.

The pivot is the latest in a series the fast-food chain has made since announcing its plans in 2021 to cut its global greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050.
McDonald’s has contributed more than 57 million tons of carbon emissions in 2021 — more than the entire country of Norway — according to a report released by the company this year.

Self-serve soda fountains are also on the way out. Getty ImagesThe chain has since swapped out some of its plastic Happy Meal toys for 3D paper products that children can construct themselves and has turned to recycled packaging for some of its products.
Additionally, McDonald’s tested strawless lids in some US cities earlier this year and the chain recently announced it would eliminate its self-serve soda machines in 2032.
The McFlurry has already seen massive changes in Europe — the ice cream treats are served without plastic lids in countries throughout the continent and are sometimes closed with “molded fiber” tops instead.
