Cottage cheese is back and bitter than ever.
Gen Z’s new food obsession is an old classic: cottage cheese. The low-fat, low-calorie snack is having a moment on TikTok — and flying off shelves in grocery stores despite a spike in dairy prices.
According to new research from The Knowledge Bank, cheese has seen its highest level of sales in 40 years. Instead of making avocado toast, @cookingwithnoa used cottage cheese on her sourdough toast with chili oil and scrambled eggs.
The user explained in the comments that it’s lower in calories and higher in protein than avocado.
Another influencer @oliviajarviss made a “viral” cottage cheese pizza, where the cheese serves as the base.
According to the user, the whole pizza is 353 calories, 23 grams of carbs and 58 grams of protein.
A nutritionist on TikTok @emthenutritionist went viral for her hot honey cottage cheese toast with 1.9 million views.
Her recipe includes mashing avocado with spring onion, basil and parsley, then seasoning with salt and pepper, putting the avo mash on toast and adding the cottage cheese on top.
People in the comments loved the recipe.
“Made it today, can confirm it slaps 10/10,” one said.
“Made this last night, was absolutely delicious, thank you!” another said.
