Most people running low on cash at gambling tables take a stroll to the nearest ATM. But Kerry Johnson does things a little differently. His highly inadvisable actions, which took place last summer, led to Johnson pleading guilty on Wednesday to second-degree robbery and facing 5 to 18 years in prison.

Here’s how it went down: While playing blackjack at Mardi Gras Casino in Nitro, W. Va., the 52-year-old, self-employed marketing specialist set down a $25 chip to let the dealer know to hold his seat. He then walked out of the building and, according to the Charleston Gazette-Mail, drove to a bank in nearby Charleston. Claiming to have a gun and a bomb, he relieved the S&L of $5,000 cash and returned to the blackjack table.

Assistant prosecutor Fred Giggenbach told the Gazette-Mail, “He went back to the casino and lost more money.”

Soon after, police tracked Johnson to his home and found him dozing on his sofa. He was arrested and unable to make his $50,000 cash-only bond. While facing the judge and entering his plea on Wednesday, Johnson did offer a couple of reasonable excuses for the bone-headed holdup: He had taken a load of drugs that day and was broke due to a gambling habit.
