A Navy vet is speaking out after his mom accidentally turned him into a viral meme attacking the #MeToo movement.

Pieter Hanson’s mother wanted to speak out against the #MeToo movement, which she felt put men at risk of being falsely accused of sexual misconduct. The mom was inspired to voice her opinion in light of newly appointed Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused of sexual assault in high school.

So she uploaded a Twitter photo of her son, a 32-year-old Navy veteran, Saturday using the hashtag #HimToo.

“This is MY son,” she captioned the photo of Hanson in his Navy uniform. “He graduated #1 in boot camp. He was awarded the USO award. He was #1 in A school. He is a gentleman who respects women. He won’t go on solo dates due to the current climate of false sexual accusations by radical feminists with an axe to grind. I VOTE. #HimToo.”

Her post quickly went viral, prompting people to post mocking memes with the hashtag #HimToo poking fun at men who feel their reputation is in danger in the #MeToo era.

Hanson wanted to do damage control and told his mom to delete the tweet, but she ended up deleting her account altogether. He also created a new Twitter account, @thatwasmymom, to address the misunderstanding.

“I was dumbfounded when I saw it, but at the end of the day we all have crazy parents,” Hanson, a student at the University of Central Florida, told BBC. “I still love her. She’s my mum. What she said was pretty inflammatory, but I want to make sure it doesn’t come back harsh on her.”

Hanson insists that he’s an ally of the #MeToo movement, which in the past year has given a platform for victims of sexual assault to share their stories.

“It doesn’t represent me at all,” Hanson told the Washington Post. “I love my mom to death, but boy . . . I’m still trying to wrap my head around all this.”
