Miss Universe beauty queens dazzled viewers with wildly elaborate — and in some cases absurd — costumes showcasing their homelands at the pageant in Thailand on Monday.
Mis USA takes the stage as a rose.EPAMiss USA, Sarah Rose Summers, strutted her stuff on stage while dressed as her country’s national flower — a rose — complete with a flowing, removable skirt of faux petals and a bright bloom atop her head.
“The rose grows naturally throughout the United States, is a symbol of love — and also happens to be Sarah’s middle name!” the night’s announcer gushed.
The cavalcade of colors and culture came during the annual Miss Universe pageant’s National Costume Show portion, held at the Nongnooch Pattaya International Convention and Exhibition Center in Chonburi.
Others among the event’s 94 contestants wore more bizarre get-ups. Miss Vietnam dressed as a basket of banh mi, the country’s signature sandwich, which is generally made of pork, pickled veggies and served on a baguette.
After the appetite-whetting show, Miss Singapore paraded around in a dress printed with an image of two arms extended in a handshake — one draped in a US flag, the other a North Korean one.
The image, the announcer declared, was meant to honor President Trump and Kim Jong Un’s June 12 summit in Singapore and highlight the Southeast Asian nation’s role as “a global broker of peace” and a “supporter of denuclearization.”
Other contestants opted for more straightforward approaches.
Miss Costa Rica sported butterfly wings, while Miss Japan rocked an outfit inspired by the popular Japanese animation franchise “Sailor Moon.”
“It’s the female version of a ninja,” the announcer explained.
In a nod to national folklore, Miss Peru dressed as a siren with a sparkling silver mermaid tail.
“[Miss Peru] grew up hearing stories of spirits who live in the jungle . . . One of the sirens turned herself into a beautiful woman and captivated with her beautiful voice,” the announcer said.
Meanwhile, Miss Chile, holding a spear and mask, paid tribute to a tribe that once roamed the county’s central region.

Miss India stepped out on stage strapped to a huge throne, which she then sat in.
The outfit honored “the empowerment of women,” the announcer said, adding it weighed 105 pounds.
Miss Great Britain also celebrated women. She held a ballot box and a sign reading, “Let’s finish what they started,” to honor the centenary of women winning the right to vote in her country.
“Women in the UK won the right to vote in 1918. This year marks the 100th anniversary,” the announcer said.
Other costumes included Miss Nepal’s eight-armed get-up with “eye-catching pearls” to represent a goddess “who gazes down at the world.”
Miss Brazil wore a colorful feathered outfit to capture the beauty of the Amazon rainforest.
And Miss Spain, Ángela Ponce, 26 — who made history as the pageant’s first transgender titleholder — wore a bright white dress dotted with red flowers.
The competition portion of the 67th Miss Universe pageant, hosted by Steve Harvey, will be broadcast live on Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. on Fox from the Impact arena out in Pak Kret, a suburb of Bangkok.
