Let’s just stay in tonight.

The James Beard Foundation Awards were announced last night, handing out what some call the Oscars of the food world. And even though New York City may be home to the best new restaurant — congrats to Tribeca’s hip natural wine-soaked brasserie Frenchette — it’s gradually become home to fewer and fewer awardees.

The past three years, New York City has won just four awards the foundation gives out for restaurants — just as many as Chicago and Washington, DC. This year, Jody Williams and Rita Sodi of West Village Italian spot Via Carota were crowned best chefs of NYC. And in the “America’s Classic’s” category, Bed-Stuy’s A&A Bake & Double Roti Shop was honored.

Korean tasting menu spot Atomix in Nomad also got a nod for its design — but the designers, Studio Writers, are based in South Korea.

Otherwise, the awards went out to other reaches of the country. There wasn’t even a finalist in the national “Outstanding Chef” category from New York City! It’s a far cry from just a few years ago when New York seemed to be the galaxy’s culinary capital — in 2016, the city’s foodies scooped up nine awards, and in 2013 it was a lucky 13 awards.

The foundation acknowledged changes in this years awards to make it more diverse — this may have a little something to do with the city’s recent slippage. But, perhaps this place could stand to be knocked down a few pegs: this year, New York City ranked 90 out of 125 cities in terms of its quality of life, according to US News & World Report’s 2019 list of best places to live in America.

The year’s buzziest winner, Kwame Onwuachi, named the foundation’s Rising Star Chef, was raised in the Bronx. But the Eleven Madison Park-alum took his talents to Kith and Kin — in Washington, DC.

In his recent memoir, “Notes from a Young Black Chef,” the chef describes an alienating moment when he tried to get the restaurant’s chef, Chris Flint, to use a different name for a device that shares a name with the Italian equivalent of the n-word.

Flint brushed Onwuachi off by saying “No black people eat here anyway,” Onwuachi writes.

“I kept my face still as the night and nodded,” he continues. “It was not a gesture of acceptance. It was not a gesture of resistance. I let Flint know that I recognized his move for what it was: a racist jab masked as a gesture of friendship.”

Here’s the full list of winners.
