College kids shouldn’t have to be livin’ on ramen, says Jon Bon Jovi.

To make sure university students don’t go hungry, the 57-year-old rock star is opening a third location of his Jon Bon Jovi Soul Kitchen restaurant in his native New Jersey.

The newest JBJ Soul Kitchen will open Jan. 22 on Rutgers University’s Newark campus and will offer diners the option of paying for their three-course, locally sourced meal with money or through volunteer work, NJ.com reports.

“When you send your kids off to school, you don’t think about, after tuition, books, living, what’s left for food?” Bon Jovi tells CBS News. “And so few are on meal plans to begin with. And that’s another reason why they’re eating ramen noodles. We all think it’s the rite of passage – to study hard and eat the ramen noodles. But how about if it’s the only thing you can afford?”

At JBJ Soul Kitchen, no guests are turned away for inability to pay, and the menus have no prices — guests of means are asked to pay $20 for their farm-to-table meal, in part to help subsidize someone else’s. The restaurant further subsidizes the food by being powered mostly by volunteer work and using mostly donated food.

The idea came from Bon Jovi’s wife of 30 years, Dorothea Hurley. “Hunger doesn’t look like what your mind’s eye might imagine,” she tells CBS. “It’s the people at your church. It’s the kids that go to school with your kids.”

On any given night, the two existing JBJs — one in Toms River, the other in Red Bank — are filled by roughly half paying customers and half people unable to afford a $20 meal.

In January, when the federal government was shut down, the Red Bank location provided free meals to furloughed workers for a day.
