They may be ruff on the eyes, but one of these pooches is about to be crowned king as the world’s ugliest canine.

More than a dozen mangy mutts will bark it out Friday at the 26th annual World’s Ugliest Dog Contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in California.

Proving that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, these dogs will compete in four different categories including first impressions, unique features, personality and audience reaction. The unflattering competitors will show off their quirky looks that range from extra long tongues to snaggletooths and even a one-eyed pooch named Boogie.

Rascal, a pure-bred Chinese Crested hairless, toothless pooch, is hoping to win his second title at this year’s competition. The 7-pounder won in 2002, and is actually an ugly dog legacy — his mom, dad, grandma and grandpa have all clinched the “World’s Ugliest Dog” title, too. Rascal’s granddaddy Chi Chi set a Guinness World Record for winning the most ugly dog contests, taking home eight gold medals.

The well-loved pups have to prove that a vet says they are both “naturally ugly” and healthy, according to Sonoma-Marin Fair’s website. Winners often become instantaneous Internet celebrities, getting invited to talk shows and even having their very own memes.

The top dog will also bring home the bacon in the form of $1,500 to its owner.
