A new Instagram-worthy dessert is on the horizon.
To celebrate Macaron Day on March 20, French pastry chef François Payard will whip up the “Macaronut,” a mash-up of — you guessed it — macarons and doughnuts: a macaron-sized, doughnut-shaped cookie filled with strawberry cream and topped with multicolored sprinkles. Each little treat packs a mighty 450 calories.
The bite-size desserts will be available at the chef’s three eponymous pâtisseries for $5 a pop.
Payard, famed for his croissants, cakes and chocolates, created Macaron Day in 2010 to celebrate the iconic Parisian cookie. Half of the day’s sales will benefit City Harvest, a food-rescue nonprofit.
No word yet on whether the Macaronut is here to stay — or whether Payard has any other flavors up his toque.
