If your teen is already in a rut from Google Classroom glitches, huge Zoom classes and the general chaos of what promises to be a very strange academic year, tell them it’s time to hit the books.
The New York Public Library has released its list of 125 Best Books For Teens, kicking off the school year drawing from a wide range of genres, including graphic novels, drama, manga, fantasy and more.
The list is part of the ongoing celebration of the NYPL’s 125th anniversary; it released a list of 125 Books We Love for Adults on Valentine’s Day, a list of 125 Kids Books We Love on May 22, and a Black Liberation List of 95 books that highlight the Black experience in early June.
“Tasked with creating a list of 125 of the best books available for teens, our goal was to curate a list that reflects the gems that exist in the Young Adult book universe, as well as reveal some which are lesser-known,” said Katrina Ortega, the NYPL’s manager of college and career pathways and one of the list curators. “This list covers a wide variety of genres and is created with a wide range of ages in mind, and is designed so that any teen can find themselves reflected in the characters they are reading.”
Selections include “American Born Chinese” by Gene Luen Yang, “Bronx Masquerade” by Nikki Grimes, and “This One Summer” by Mariko Tamaki.
All of the 125 titles on the list are available to be borrowed for free from the New York Public Library, including through the NYPL’s SimplyE e-reader app.
