A photographer weathered a severe winter storm to capture the moment when 46-foot-high waves crashed onto the shore of a Scottish island.

Ryan Sandison snapped the picture during Storm Conor, which slammed Eshaness, Shetland Islands, on Monday with heavy rain, sleet and 94-mph winds.

The Met Office — the United Kingdom’s national weather service — issued an amber weather alert for people on the islands to be aware of possible dangers from the storm.

Since the storm, the UK has experienced below-freezing temperatures and frozen fog. The severe weather follows Britain’s second-warmest Christmas on record.
