I can’t deal with the new sense of political correctness at work. As a manager, I can’t even comment on how nice someone looks without being accused of making an “inappropriate comment.” Can I suggest that I step down as manager and take a pay cut without damaging my career?

I agree that the country has gone too far with certain sensitivities. That said, I also believe that 99.9 percent of managers know how to compliment someone without that person feeling like they want to take a hot shower. It’s not difficult, and, if you have earned a good reputation, people will also give you the benefit of the doubt. So my money is on the problem being you — not political correctness. If that is the case, then you need some sensitivity training or you shouldn’t be a manager.

I’m tired of being labeled a “millennial” at work. How do I stand out as an individual?

Finally, a brave voice that won’t be reduced to a cultural stereotype. I’ve been hiring 20-somethings for 20-something years and such a diverse group of people aren’t all the same. If you want to stand out, crush your job with a positive attitude. Impress people with your performance, work ethic and integrity as a human being. Be the kind of person that others want to have around and, trust me, you will stand out.
