There’s no such thing as a daddy-daughter prom.

At least that’s the stance taken by school officials in Fayette County, Georgia, where a high school senior’s wish to take her father to her prom has been rejected, WSB-TV reports.

“She’s actually pretty upset,” Ronald Toussaint said of his 17-year-old daughter, Ariell, whose request was shot down by the principal at Fayette County High and the district superintendent.

Touissant said he bought his daughter a dress for Saturday’s big dance, but it doesn’t look like she’ll be wearing it by his side after all. He was honored by his daughter’s idea, saying that she told him he was the “best man” she knows — either in or out of school.

“She explained it to me,” he said. “Told me that I’m the best man that she knows.”

But the proposed pairing was promptly turned down by school and district officials, citing policy that prom dates cannot be younger than ninth-grade students and no older than 20. Touissant isn’t totally buying that explanation, though, saying his daughter’s request shouldn’t be troubling.

“It should be ‘my child’ comes first,” he said. “Right? And whatever she needs. If she needs me to come to the prom with her — and it makes her feel comfortable — then that should be fine.”

Ariell Touissant declined an interview Thursday, as did school administrators, according to WSB-TV.

District officials told the station that no parents of students will be allowed to attend the student-only event, which will be chaperoned by faculty.

A message seeking comment from district officials was not immediately returned early Friday.
