A mom who allegedly recklessly drove a scooter and caused her son’s death skipped out on his funeral and fled to Mexico, according to reports.
Oklahoma police believe Evelyn Ortiz-Luevano bolted after learning she’d been charged with child neglect and negligent homicide in connection with her 5-year-old son Caiden Reyes-Ortiz’s death, Tulsa World reported.
The boy was fatally struck by a car after falling off a Lime rental electric scooter that Ortiz-Luevano is accused of driving on April 23.
The mom allegedly drove into oncoming traffic in Tulsa and failed to stay along the outer edge of the road. She’s also accused of driving in “reckless disregard” for the safety of others, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Tulsa World.
She and friends had taken the scooters for a jaunt with their children along Riverside Drive, which stretches along the Arkansas River.
A witness told cops she saw the pair of scooters driving toward oncoming traffic and that some cars honked at them.
Ortiz-Luevano was about 40 yards ahead of her pal when police claim she swerved left to avoid hitting a car — and the force of the swerve tossed Caiden from the scooter to the pavement. The car’s driver, Renier Davison, also swerved to avoid hitting the scooter but struck Caiden.
Davison fled the scene of the accident but surrendered to authorities last week. He was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash, driving with a suspended license and causing an accident without a valid driver’s license.
Sgt. Shane Tuell told the outlet Monday that police have received tips that Ortiz-Luevano fled to Mexico over the weekend.
It’s unclear whether she’s a Mexican national and authorities did not specify her citizenship status.
A GoFundMe page set up by the dry cleaning service where Ortiz-Luevano worked suggests Caiden’s funeral was held Sunday.
The mom could face anywhere from probation to life in prison if convicted of child neglect, which is a felony. Negligent homicide, a misdemeanor, carries up to one year. The charges against her were filed Friday.
