A Pennsylvania mom handed over a baby to a stranger — insisting the child “would be better off” — before fleeing from the scene, officials said.
The mom gave the stranger the baby boy Tuesday while leaving the Royal Laundromat in Scranton, police said.
“This woman handed over the baby to her, saying that the baby would be better off with her and walked away,” Scranton Police Chief Carl Graziano told news station Fox 56.
Police shared photos on social media of the child, who they believe is between 12 and 14 months old, and tracked down the mother.
It’s unclear whether charges will be filed against the mom.
The child is now in the custody of Lackawanna County Office of Youth and Family Services, officials said.
“The baby does seem to be in good health, from what we can see,” Graziano told the news station. “And we have had the baby checked out by the hospital and the hospital did not find any known medical issues with the baby.”
