For this high-school prom, the principal has to say yes to the dress.

In Shreveport, Louisiana, new principal Kim Pendleton caused a stir this week when she sent a text to Southwood High School students informing them that she’ll have to approve their planned attire for the April prom, reports KTAL.

The lengthy text outlined rules for female students and boys’ presumed female off-campus dates — but no explicit rules for the boys.

“As you begin shopping for your attire, please make sure you do not purchase any clothes that are sheer or revealing in any manner,” wrote Pendleton, whose school has 1,545 students. “Also, make sure we do not see excess cleavage or skin. Prior to purchasing an outfit, I will need you to send me a picture of you in the outfit with your name and grade. Once I approve the outfit, you may purchase it. The approved outfit is the only one you will be allowed to wear to prom.”

Social-media reactions have referred to Pendleton’s request as excessively invasive, while others called foul on the principal having final say on a notoriously expensive purchase and control over how students express themselves.

“Once again the blame is placed solely on the female,” wrote one Facebook commenter. “Way to perpetuate rape culture.”

“This is such bs,” wrote another.

Jakarius Simpson, whose sister is a Southwood junior, told KTAL that he and his family take issue with Pendleton’s reach.

“It should be the [parents’] say-so … instead of the principal, so I think that’s just totally wrong,” he said.

But not all are against Pendleton’s request.

“As a grandparent, I’m kind of from the old school, back in the day,” Albert Bryant, whose granddaughter attends the school, told KTAL. “I can understand because there are some young ladies that are raising themselves more or less, and they can get a little bit provocative.”

There will be an upcoming assembly in which students will get to voice their concerns over this requirement, according to a statement from Caddo Parish Public Schools provided to KTAL.

“In April, Southwood will host their annual prom and school administration has taken a proactive approach of asking parents for photos ahead of their upcoming event,” the statement reads. “It is a school-level decision for all formal dress to be approved prior to the event.”
