Was it the Toro de France?
California bicycle racers redefined “bull-riding” after an ornery steer wandered into the bike path and attacked several competitors, as seen in this shocking video.
“The bull charged and struck three riders total,” videographer and race contestant Richard Pepper told Storyful of the fiasco, which occurred Feb. 12 during the Bianchi Rock Cobbler, a “stupidly hard” 80-mile course in the Bakersfield area, per the contest’s website.
According to Pepper, riders were winding their way through a private cattle ranch that was home to “an aggressive bull.”
“Before the race, they [the ranchers] drove it to the far side of their large ranch,” the cycling enthusiast explained. “Yet the bull came back to the section where the race was going through.”
Little did the competitors know, their bike race was about to turn into a rodeo.
The bull turned the bike race into a contact sport. ELEVENGEAR via StoryfulIn the ensuing 30-second clip, an oblivious cyclist named Tony Inderbitzin is seen crossing the hilly halfway point of the course, whereupon he encounters the belligerent beast in the middle of the path.
Per Fox News, the racer initially mistook it for a cow and didn’t realize the reality until it was too late to steer clear.
Upon spotting him, Ferdinand lowers his head and rams Inderbitzin so he goes flying off his ride as onlookers cry out in shock. The cantankerous beefcake follows it up by headbutting the now dismounted racer, sending him hurtling through the air in a scene out of Pamplona’s iconic Running of the Bulls event. The clip ends with the raging bull fleeing the scene.
“I have never been this sore,” exclaimed victim Tony Inderbitzin. “Initially after the attack, my neck was killing me, that was the focal point of the soreness. Now it’s the lower back.” ELEVENGEAR via StoryfulInderbitzin painted the harrowing encounter in an interview with Fox, explaining, “I just kept going and as I got within probably 10 or 15 yards of him, he turned, squared up and I had maybe a one to brace myself.”
And while the cyclist was not seriously injured, the attack left him feeling “extremely sore” and prevented him from finishing the race.
“I have never been this sore,” exclaimed Inderbitzin. “Initially after the attack, my neck was killing me, that was the focal point of the soreness. Now it’s the lower back.”
The horned interloper approaches Tony Inderbitzin. ELEVENGEAR via StoryfulSam Ames, the creator of the Rock Cobbler, addressed the incident in an Instagram clip, in which he confirmed that three people “got tangled up with that bull.” He also uploaded a video showing another one of the attacks with the caption: “You mess with the bull, you get the horns. Literally.”
Thankfully, all the riders came home safe and were “all back here drinking beers,” according to Ames, who added that two out of three even finished the race.
Nonetheless, the bike boss is using the incident as a cautionary tale of the perils of riding with the bulls.
“For the record, while we love our shenanigans at the event, this was not planned, we don’t condone riding at or near bulls,” Ames told Fox in a statement. “Rider safety is a top priority … so while this is able to get some laughs, thankfully, we will review or modify our route as needed for next year.”
In another bull-ying incident in December, a 2,000-pound cow charged a police officer who tried to herd it off the highway.
