This marriage proposal on a mountain was supposed to end on a high note. Instead, it turned into a rescue operation.

Joshua Mason, 27, and Katie Davis, 28, traveled from Texas to Colorado to go hiking at Jasper Peak, just outside Boulder. The couple hiked for eight miles Saturday until they reached the 13,000-foot summit, according to CBS 4, where Mason planned to pop the question.

“Mason was hoping to find an isolated scenic location ‘away from any other people’ to propose to Davis,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a news release. “They found exactly such a location, and Davis happily accepted the surprise proposal.”

But soon after Mason got down on one knee, it started to get dark and they had trouble finding a trail back to their car. They didn’t have enough equipment or water to stay on the mountain overnight.

Fortunately, a male hiker found them and brought them to Diamond Lake, a nearby camping ground where he was staying with friends.

But when Mason and Davis showed symptoms of altitude sickness and dehydration, one of the campers hiked down to his car, drove to a nearby town for cellphone service and called 911 at 2 a.m. Sunday.

Paramedics found Mason and Davis two hours later.

“He determined that Mason and Davis needed to move to a lower altitude immediately,” the sheriff’s office said. “By that point, they had recovered enough that they were both able to walk down to the trailhead, assisted by Rocky Mountain Rescue Group personnel.”

They were able to head back down to safety by 6:30 a.m.

“Mason acknowledged that he did not allow enough time to complete the hike before dark, and they did not carry enough water or food,” the sheriff’s office said. “Deputies determined that the couple’s engagement was still on, despite the memorable ordeal.”
