Does it take you hours to respond to someone’s texts? You could be “cricketing.”

It’s the latest annoying dating behavior, according to dating Web site Plenty of Fish. The term refers to visibly reading someone’s texts but not responding — for hours or even days, reports Business Insider. It’s an issue for both singletons and people in relationships.

There are a few reasons to “cricket” someone, Kurt Smith, a therapist who specializes in counseling men, tells the Huffington Post. Sometimes it’s a mistake, sometimes it’s because a singleton isn’t interested in their date and sometimes it’s a “passive aggressive” action that men and women employ to punish their partners.

“Being ignored is not only disrespectful, but it’s also unloving,” Smith says.

And cricketing extends beyond Tinder matches and significant others — it can also include flaky exchanges with other people in your life, such as friends or relatives.

Diane Gottsman, an etiquette expert and the author of “Modern Etiquette for a Better Life,” says that parents and older people tend to be prone to cricketing.

“[One of my clients] said she could be having a smooth exchange with [her parents], but as soon as she asked if they were still OK with baby-sitting the kids for the weekend . . . she’d get nothing but crickets,” Gottsman tells the Huffington Post.

To keep cricketing out of your life, make your expectations clear with the people you’re digitally interacting with — and avoid cricketing others, of course.

“Let them know that you are busy and will respond later,” Sameera Sullivan, founder of matchmaking service Lasting Connections, tells The Post.

And if you find yourself on the receiving end of this from a date, Sullivan says to run.

“Do not text them or contact them again,” she says. “They are showing that they’re insecure and playing games.”
