When we sent Leah, a 27-year-old writer, and Levi, a 33-year-old photographer, to Midtown French eatery La Petite Maison, we hoped their mutual love of Billy Joel would send sparks flying. While they did spend a lot of time discussing their most-loved music and books, we had to wonder if they would end up on each other’s favorite lists in the future.
He said:
When I arrived at La Petite Maison, Leah and I shared friendly smiles and handshakes. Even with the first impression, there was no “ahh” kind of feeling that comes when the chemistry is spot-on. We talked about literature, our families and our love of cities. Leah asked me what my favorite books were and what my first concert was. She’s a writer, and books have always held an important place in my heart, so I took note of her recommendations. My first concert was Billy Joel, and when I told her that, she said he’s one of her favorite musicians as well. We talked about how we are struck by the brilliance of “Piano Man.”
After the meal, I think we both knew there was only a platonic connection between us. I had fun, but the date lacked a romantic connection.
She said:
Levi arrived right on time. He was well-dressed, looking stylish without trying too hard. I could tell Levi is really friendly and has a knack for getting to know people. We discussed the menu and Levi ordered for the both of us. Normally, I hate it when someone orders for me, but it didn’t bother me because we decided to share everything.
Levi is a likable, fun guy, but at no point did I feel a spark between us. We spent a lot of time talking about books and music. He’s a Billy Joel fan, like me, which I’ve found is rare. Although we have similar tastes, I just don’t think we clicked romantically. After dinner, we hugged but didn’t exchange numbers. I don’t think we’ll see each other again, but that’s fine. I still had a pleasant evening.
