When it comes to love, British guys channel their inner Mr. Darcys — but not necessarily in a good way.
A new survey out of Manchester Metropolitan University found that British blokes are more traditional when it comes to relationship gender roles than men from other European countries are.
European women won’t be thrilled to hear that, as they understandably prefer to be in more egalitarian relationships, according to The Independent.
Researchers spoke to 32 heterosexual, binational couples across Europe for the study.
James, a male British participant, told the scientists, “We are very traditional in Britain in terms of relationships and expecting the man to do certain things and the women to do things.”
But it’s not all bad news: British men are still downright progressive compared to some men from southern and eastern Europe, according to some survey respondents.
Chiara, an Italian woman who’s dating a male Brit, admires that Englishmen need less nagging than men from her homeland do. “If they want to, they can cook, they can put a load of washing on, they can do the washing up. In my previous relations in Italy, this was not the case at all,” she says in the study.
