An apparently neglected Shih Tzu mix named Master Roshi has a new lease on life after having 9 pounds of matted hair removed from his body, WTKR reports. His fur was so knotted that it completely covered his features.
“We weren’t even sure he had eyes, he was so bad,” Pauline Cushman, the founder and director at Hope for Life Rescue in Virginia Beach, Va. — where an unidentified woman dropped off Master Roshi in a box — tells the channel.
The woman didn’t provide any information on Master Roshi’s condition. He’s believed to be 17 years old, and is blind and deaf. He was also so weak that he couldn’t walk.
“That didn’t happen overnight, and it didn’t happen in a short few months,” Cushman says. “It’s probably been well over a year or two for him to get that bad.”
It took some three hours to remove all the tangled fur. Master Roshi later had an appointment with a veterinarian to check his organ functions. After all the exams wrap up and his bloodwork is analyzed, the rescue shelter will determine if he’s eligible for adoption.
“I don’t understand why people don’t cry out for help instead of letting the neglect go this far,” says Cushman. “Anybody would be willing to take and help a dog rather than waiting until it gets this far.”
