You’re housebound and hungry — but there’s relief from monotonous, reheated meat loaf and gummy chicken wings from the joint up the block.
Our sit-down restaurants are history for now. We already miss their friendly vibe, fun soundtracks and the cheering smiles of our favorite waiters.
But we can still enjoy what they put on the plate. Hundreds of restaurants are offering their menus for takeout and delivery. They include some of the most popular and acclaimed places and even two that boast a Michelin star.
There’s no way to replicate the full dining-out experience, but we can make still love their food. Here’s a selective list of some of the best choices in many cuisines. They’ll whet your appetite for the whole enchilada when the crisis ends. Until then, bon appetit — and don’t be ashamed to lay on the wine and booze.
BALTHAZAR, 80 Spring St. Keith McNally’s beloved brasserie has takeout and delivery from 5-10 p.m. Limited menu includes house classic steak au poivre. Order at 212-965-1414. Online delivery via Caviar coming soon.
CAFE FIORELLO, 1900 Broadway. Owner Shelly Fireman turned popular Lincoln Center-area trattoria into an all-day market from 10:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m. every day. A three-man team serves up antipasti and and prepare-at-home entrees for takeout and pizza for delivery. Check Seamless or cafefiorello.com.
CARBONE, 181 Thompson St. Haut-retro Italian offers a limited version of its Michelin-starred menu via Caviar including its dinosaur-size, $69 veal parmesan. You won’t get the 1960 atmosphere at home but the food can make up for it. Available via trycaviar.com.
THE NOMAD, 1170 Broadway (28th Street). Its famous roast chicken is available for timed pickup only (no delivery) for $30 per person or $40 with sides and dessert. Only through Resy.
RUSSIAN SAMOVAR, 256 W. 52d St. All the classics (chicken kiev, pelmeni, beef stroganoff) are available noon-8 p.m. seven days. Too bad they can’t send their piano bar home, too! Delivery on Grubhub, Seamless, Delivery.com, and UberEats.
SHOJI, 69 Leonard St. Acclaimed kaiseki-style spot offers takeout from 5:30 p.m. Chef Derek Wilcox offers boxed sets of familiar and unfamiliar sushi for $80, $120 and $150. Call or email ahead for pickup at 212-404-4600 or info@69leonardstreet.com.
TAMARIND, 99 Hudson St. (Tribeca). Avtar Walia’s ever-popular Indian offers its entire menu — including their famous Malai halibut — from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and from 5-11 p.m. Extensive tandoori lineup, too. Order online or call 212-775-9000.
