Little is known about this senior citizen couple — but a picture is worth countless tearjerking words.

Staffers at Cremona Hospital in the northern Italian region of Lombardy captured the bittersweet moment a husband and wife — identified only as Giorgio and Rosa — were reunited after being separated for a month while undergoing treatment for the coronavirus.

Giorgio is pictured gently caressing Rosa’s cheek before dissolving into tears and holding her in a tight embrace. The pair have reportedly been wed for 52 years — and have rarely spent time apart.

“It was one of those moments that cannot be forgotten,” Dr. Manuela Denti, coordinator of gynecology at the hospital, recounts in a post on the facility’s Facebook page. “We could not avoid breaking into tears.”

Denti says Giorgio never complains, but had confessed he was sad upon being hospitalized alone in mid-March — because he wanted to go home to his wife.

“Giorgio is one of those people who always wants to touch,” Denti says. When Rosa was hospitalized soon after her husband, doctors waited for her condition to improve before organizing a surprise reunion with Giorgio after days apart.

“It was a long hug, full of sweet words, 10 minutes of tenderness and the hope of guaranteeing their health,” Denti says. “The only pity was that we couldn’t discharge them together.”

Italy has registered 162,488 cases of COVID-19, with 21,067 deaths, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University. On Tuesday, the country’s civil protection agency reported 2,972 new cases of COVID-19 within the last 24 hours, the lowest infection rate since March 13, when 2,547 cases were reported, according to the Associated Press.

Rosa, whose condition was not as serious, has since been discharged and looks forward to Giorgio coming home soon so they can resume spoiling their dog Willy, who has lived with them for 17 years, Yahoo reports.
