When it comes to impolite places in the US, the Sunshine State is like a giant middle finger.

The Big Apple has a reputation for rudeness, but is it really the most impolite city in the US? Not according to a recent survey, which found that Miami takes the cake when it comes to having a discourteous populace.

The study, conducted by language-learning platform Preply, found that the Magic City was “the rudest in 2024,” with locals ranking their fellow residents a whopping 9.88 out of 10 on the impudence scale.

This was based on a variety of factors, including lack of awareness in public, noisiness in shared places and rudeness to service staff.

Coming in second and third were Philadelphia (9.12) and Tampa, Florida (8.88) — the latter of which was named the rudest city by Preply in 2022.

“If you’re in Miami, Philadelphia or Tampa, don’t be surprised if you come across the rudest people you’ve ever met,” Preply wrote.

To deduce the most ill-mannered metropolises, the site polled residents about “social behaviors they noticed in their city” and then calculated a rudeness score on a scale of 1 to 10.

Rounding out the Top 5 on this Mount Rushmore of rudeness were Louisville, Kentucky (8.72), and Oakland, California (8.67).

In fact, many cities seem to be getting more insolent, with Louisville, Kentucky, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Austin, Texas, all placing at least five spots higher in the rude rankings than they did in 2022.

Overall, the most commonly observed rude behaviors were a lack of care for others, noisiness in public and a lack of self-awareness. Meanwhile, the older an American is, the more likely they are to view transplants as ruder than longtime residents, per the study.

Politics played a factor as well. A staggering 1 in 2 Americans thinks residents of their city have become more rude ahead of the upcoming election.

To make matters worse, nearly a quarter of Americans have considered relocating due to the ill-mannered antics of their fellow residents.

Fortunately, there are plenty of polite cities to counterbalance the rudeness.

Omaha, Nebraska, was rated as the least rude city, with an average ranking of 6.24 on the rudeness scale.

This was followed by Minneapolis, with 6.35, and San Diego, with 6.68.

Just like with their impolite counterparts, many of these polite cities got increasingly more so from two years back.

“Looking back at 2022, cities like San Diego ranked significantly kinder, moving down 15 spots on the rudest cities list,” Preply wrote.

On the most-improved list — cities that dropped the furthest in the rudeness rankings over the years — were Washington, DC; Detroit; San Jose, California; and Milwaukee.

The site added, “This shows that it’s possible for the general norm in a city to frequently change, resulting in a more positive experience for those who reside in or visit it.”
