As if Mondays weren’t bad enough, today is the most depressing day of the year – and it has the potential to be the “Bluest Monday” of all time.
The gloomy prediction is according to Welsh psychologist Dr. Cliff Arnall, who coined the sad term back in 2005.
Arnall invented a scientific equation built on “misery factors,” like weather, debt, time since Christmas and motivation, to determine that the third Monday in January is the saddest day of the year.
But today, Jan. 16, is set to be the most miserable yet, thanks to Donald Trump, Brexit and the recent deaths of celebrities like Carrie Fisher, Arnall told the Telegraph.
“Other extra factors this year are Trump and Brexit causing uncertainty and increasing people’s fears,” Arnall said. “The deaths of so many celebrities, many in their 50s and 60s, [have] also worried people by reminding them of their own mortality.”
Arnall said people are additionally concerned about giant credit card bills from Christmas, icy weather and feel an overall lack of motivation.
But Crisis Text Line, a not-for-profit crisis intervention hotline, said Blue Monday was nothing but a bunch of baloney.
“The data tells us that ‘Blue Monday’ is a myth. Depression isn’t limited to a single date. People can face crisis any day of the year,” said its founder and CEO Nancy Lublin. “We’re here 24/7/365.”
