Château Saint-Martin & Spa

When Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie finally tied the knot last August, they snuck off to their chateau in Provence, France, for a romantic family-style elopement. Those without their own castle can jet off to the region’s iconic Château Saint-Martin hotel, just up the hill from the town of Vence. The property was originally the residence of the Knights Templar, who invented how to live large in the Middle Ages (which explains the chapel at the heart of the hotel, now available for weddings).
Enjoy a gourmet meal on a private balcony.Château Saint-Martin/Relais & ChâteauxSince its restoration in 1970, the chateau has played host to all kinds of jet-setting lovers, from the Rolling Stones to heads of state, and it has since been immortalized by the late society photographer Slim Aarons as a playground for the rich and famous. The formula for romance here has been perfected over several decades: gourmet meals on the private balconies of suites overlooking hills rolling down to the Cote D’Azur, Champagne brunch in the olive-tree garden of the summer restaurant, a manicured pool straight out of a Bain de Soleil ad.
Not to mention allmanner of life-of-leisure diversions, from on-site tennis to polo and mountain biking. Brides can get polished to a high gloss at the Sisley spa before venturing from the fragrant cocoon. (The French Riviera and the decadent delights of Cannes, Nice and Monte Carlo are only an hour away.) The area close to the hotel has long drawn artists like Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, and is now a destination for art lovers: The Maeght Foundation in nearby St. Paul de Vence houses one of the foremost collections of contemporary art in France, and if you can get a reservation at La Colombe D’Or restaurant, you can admire real Picassos and Mirós on display, given by the artists as payment for dinner bills.

Domaine de la Baume

The village of Tourtour offers a well-preserved slice of Provençal life: a lively village square, eight fountains and two castles with watchtowers. Here, expressionist painter Bernard Buffet lived out his days in an 18th century mansion on a 99-acre estate — converted into the Domaine de la Baume hotel in 2013. The property offers wedding packages and quiet luxury in a country house setting, perfect for acting out a cinematic romance in the style of Peter Mayle’s “A Good Year.”
The intimate hotel’s 15 rooms and suites are done up in painted antique furniture and toile fabrics. Roaming rights extend to formal French gardens and ponds, olive and orange groves, pool and tennis houses, and an equestrian farm. Stays can be organized around food and wine; meals spotlighting tastes of the region are a priority, with gourmet tea times, cooking classes and a tasting vault on offer.
This season, the property is launching a new spa in collaboration with organic beauty line Pure Altitude; it will embrace a holistic approach to treatments conducted next to a natural waterfall, featuring swimming areas. It’s all ideal for honeymooners who want to savor the slowed-down rhythms of a South of France village.

The resort also hosts a stop on European golf’s Masters tour, with two David Thomasdesigned courses and a Leadbetter Golf Academy on site.
