Hey – you can’t park there!

David Beckham, David Beckham, David Beckham.

Did I mention David Beckham? I think I did. Just in case, David Beckham. Anyway. He was at the Closing Ceremonies tonight. Despite that, I’m sad to report that the last Olympic event was a little bit of a letdown. Especially when you compare it to the marvel that was the Opening Ceremonies. (If swimming relays taught us nothing, it is that it’s better to put your best stuff last.)

The two-hour show (yes, two hours) did have some highlights, most of which were in the 8-minute handover slot devoted to the next Summer Games in London. That’s when a double-decker bus (new-gen, sadly – not a Routemaster) drove onto the field and somehow transformed into a stage on which X Factor star (the British equivalent of American Idol) Leona Lewis appeared and sang “Whole Lotta Love” with Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page on guitar.

After which England’s former soccer captain popped up, kicked a ball into the crowd of athletes, and then the lights went out to aid his swift escape.

Not long after, the fireworks came, signaling the end of the show. And then like the Opening Ceremonies, the only thing left was for Jackie Chan to perform a song (again?) and voila, the Bird’s Nest was empty.
