Named in honor of the Cotton Textile Foundation that was once headquartered in this iconic 19th-century Neoclassical building, Cotton House — part of The Autograph Collection — is a 83-room, five-star property which opened in February after an extensive renovation.

A striking mix of modern and historic, the hotel retains many of the original circa-1880 elements — parquet floors, embellished ceilings, a sweeping marble staircase — which are complemented by modern design and artwork.

There’s also a restaurant, Batuar, and a rooftop pool.

WHERE

Well-situated in the heart of the city, in the Eixample district, near the Passeig de Gràcia — one of the major avenues for shopping and strolling — and two famed Antonio Gaudí landmarks, La Pedrera and Casa Batlló.

WHY

The boutique hotel exudes a warm, homey feel, thanks to all the small, considerate details throughout the common areas. Take the cozy, wood-paneled, book-lined library, with comfy leather furniture that practically begs you to settle in with a cup of tea and a newspaper.

Next door, the L’Atelier — once the office for cotton guild members and now cleverly lined with cotton fabric — offers bespoke tailoring services from Santa Eulalia upon request.

WORKS WELL

Batuar, the hotel’s sole restaurant, serves up a lovely spread for breakfast; evenings the eatery turns up the gourmet factor.

NEEDS WORK

At this point, rooms can’t be made bigger, but they sure are petite, especially for two people — measuring just 247 to 322 square feet. Try for ones with balconies, which give you a bit more space. The five suites are larger, but pricey.

DON’T MISS

Take a peek at the spiral staircase, the only one of its kind in Europe, which is suspended six stories up by metal cables; built in 1957, it’s an architectural feat, but skip climbing it if you’re afraid of heights.

MUST TRY

Any time of year, any time of day, the sprawling, 3,230-square-foot terrace is the place to relax with a drink or even a meal — its palm trees provide shade in summer, while the heat lamps and outdoor fireplaces keep you warm on cool nights.
