What it is: 5 nights, round-trip air to Tokyo

How much: from $1,409 per person, based on double occupancy, or $1,429 if you’re flying solo.

Where you’ll stay: At this price, it’ll be the Hotel Gimmond, a utilitarian (but this is tidy, orderly Japan, so that just means boring, not scary) offering just a couple of blocks away from the department stores in Nihonbashi (you’re almost neighbors to the new Mandarin Oriental) and an easy walk from Tokyo Station – from there, you can get anywhere.

Upgrade me! There are 12 more hotel choices – none of them truly spectacular, unless you go by location. Then, it has to be the New Otani, the most centrally located of all of the upgrade options — $1,649 based on double, $2,199 for single.

More after the jump.

What’s the neighborhood like? The immediate neighborhood (Akasaka) is strictly business, but you can walk to the Imperial Palace, or hop the subway a couple of stops to newly-chic Roppongi and always-chic Omotesando, as opposed to being sequestered in more remote areas such as Shinagawa (think World Financial Center, and all the excitement that promises the visitor), or, heaven help us, Ikebukuro (Queens).

Value proposition: The lowest round-trip fare we could find for a midweek departure in non-Thanksgiving week November was $819, on American (found on aa.com, via Kayak). A five-night stay at the Gimmond for two? $639. Total savings? Less than $100. Airport transfers are not included (from Narita, look to pay a minimum of $25 per person for a never-ending bus ride).

Final verdict: This isn’t a guided tour, so you don’t get any benefit from having booked through the company. However, don’t write it off – if you want to do weekend travel, you may find the prices for airfare on your own considerably higher, where Go Today’s prices remain the same. Have a serious look at both options before proceeding.

Details: Purchase by October 5, travel by December 5.
