ESCAPES: Naples, Fla.
Make this the winter you hit the white sandy beaches of Naples, Fla. Not much more than an hour from Miami and a world away, we think that Naples never goes out of style – particularly its historic core, a great, walkable area with two distinct shopping and dining districts, both within a reasonable stroll of the pier and beach.
A great deal of people don’t know about Naples proper, though. That’s because the famous resorts here aren’t actually in Naples at all – they’re in a suburb that managed to attach itself to this charming town. They are Anywhere, Florida. Ugh. (P.S.: We don’t care that the Ritz-Carlton on the beach is awesome. It is still too far from everything.)
Truly, the only really great hotel in Naples proper has always been the simple Beach Resort & Golf Club, right on the water. It has just come off quite the remodel. The redone rooms are looking good. Call us crazy, but we think the rates went up too. Up or no, not too shabby, really — in spring, they’ll be doing $259 a night. Right now, $359. On the beach. In southern Florida. We are not arguing. Also: Kids under 18 stay free with parents. Book now.
