Here’s a new-build, modern-design property from AC — the hip Spanish brand bought by Marriott to globalize its property portfolio.
AC has nearly 100 outposts in Europe; 50 are planned in the US.
The AC’s angular, eye-catching architecture is courtesy of hip Miami talent, Kobi Karp.
WHY
The AC is perfectly perched in Miami’s rapidly ascendant Mid-Beach district — the massive Edition and buzzed-about Faena Hotels are front and center from the AC’s rooftop pool. Set a block off the beach, AC is close to South Beach’s retail and restaurant scenes, but with fewer crowds, cars and chaos.
WORKING WELL
The generously windowed AC Marriott Miami.Courtesy Marriott InternationalWith their floor-to-ceiling windows, large baths, free Wi-Fi and — yes! — reasonably priced mini bar, the AC provides Miami with a much-needed budget-friendly option that still holds up in the design department. Best of all, unlike many “indie” hotels, you can use — and accrue — Marriott points.
NEEDS WORK
A few things. The pop music throughout the hotel should be turned down — if not off. The gym’s equipment could be upgraded. And rooms were left untidied for far too long.
DON’T MISS
The AC’s surprisingly sophisticated breakfast buffet. In place of heavy American-style eggs and bacon, look for lighter, European fare including a lavish spread of Spanish jamon iberico. Come evening, the entire lower-level lobby area morphs into a cozy lounge with groovy cocktail bar and tasty tapas menu by local culinary celeb Jennifer Massalo of The Liquid Projects. Her signature gin-and-tonics are major must-tries.
BOTTOM LINE
A solid, well-located and very well-priced option for travelers curious about Miami’s newest “it” district and willing to forgo direct beach access.
