Travelers entering the US through JFK Airport face the longest customs wait times in the country — about twice what they are at other major flight hubs such as Newark, Chicago, Dallas and DC, a new study says.
It takes an average of nearly half an hour to make it through Kennedy’s lines, while Newark is 17 minutes, Chicago is 16, and Dallas is 14 ,and DC is 11, according to Global Gateway Alliance.
JFK is so snail-like because there are not enough agents or kiosks and employees still use paper forms, Gateway said.
“JFK is the nation’s gateway to the world, so it is unacceptable that visitors arriving in New York are once again being met with long and grueling lines at Customs,” said Global Gateway Chairman Joe Sitt.
“It is past time for [US Customs and Border Protection] to step up and roll out automatic passport kiosks in every terminal and boost manpower to match the needs of an airport that welcomes 13 million international arrivals a year.”
Officials from the federal customs agency responded that they are working on stepping up the game.
“CBP has also hired additional officers who will be available to process travelers this summer at JFK,” said a customs spokeswoman. “We recognize how important travel, tourism and trade are to the local and national economies.
“To that, CBP is transforming our processes to reflect a 21st century border that is state-of-the-art in the security, safety and the traveler’s experience.”
