Opening a Mexican-themed, ESPN Zone of sorts that doesn’t showcase lucha libre is like opening a Thai-themed one that doesn’t feature Patpong Ping Pong — straight sacrilege, I tells ya!

Still, legendary Mexican pugilist Julio César Chávez’s Campeones (“Champions”) in Mesa, Ariz., grand opening just today, is a 40,000-square-foot, fully functioning boxing arena / HD sports bar (expect more soccer, less college football) / concert space / taqueria / arcade / museum / whatever else can tangentially be linked to greater Hispanic or boxing culture… sans said lucha.

The same guy behind Alice Cooper’s Coopers’Town restaurant helped develop the $4.5 million a-bruise-ment park. Sounds happening — given the demo it’s targeting, might actually have a chance of thriving in Arizona, an otherwise money-hemorrhaging state.
