UPDATE: Hawaii at 50
Little Hawaii. It’s been a state for 50 years. To commemorate the event, the Times rang up travel writer Paul Theroux, one of the genre’s most notorious cranks. Theroux has lived on Oahu for a couple of decades now, he loves it. Who wouldn’t? It’s Hawaii.
Except, when Theroux loves something, he still manages to annoy a good percentage of his readers. Comments on the article reflect this — interestingly, commenting was shut down after just 47 entries. Whoops! Make up your own mind, read the piece here. Or, just refer back to the feature article from my last visit to Hawaii, the one that kicked off our “50 States, 50 Stories” series in the paper, back in January.
