LOVELIEST OF TREES: Time for a gay romp with George and Laura at Washington

April showers bring May flowers, right? Don’t let today’s weather stop you from playing hooky to go see the cherry blossoms in Washington – it’s Monday, so things should be relatively quiet. May we recommend an hour in a paddle boat on the Tidal Basin?

TRAGEDY STRIKES: Whoever said there was no such thing as bad publicity, probably wasn’t thinking of the Solomon Islands, which millions of people will now recall existing, due to an 8.1 magnitude quake and subsequent tsunami today (their time).

FASTER! FASTER!: Maybe we’re sending out the shrillest of nerd alerts by alluding to any sort of excitement over this next bit of news, but surely we can’t be the only ones counting down the days until travel to France’s Lorraine region from Paris will take fifty percent less time. (Can we? [Crickets] Oh God.) The excitement begins June 10, when the latest TGV link in the Est expansion project goes live. Travel to Strasbourg from Paris will now be 2 hrs 20 min each way, instead of 4 hrs. And when the link actually gets to Strasbourg (years away, but planned) that time will drop even further. Tarte flambee, anyone?

JUST A TEENY LITTLE SIP OF A DRINK: Even the pilots find flying Virgin Atlantic a bit unfulfilling and must drink to compensate. Seriously. We read it in the Sun.

SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED: While we’re perusing the Brit papers, check out the BokLok houses that IKEA are building in Scandinavia, and now, in Britain. It’s like those Sears catalog homes you can still see in Virginia. Cool! Just hope they don’t get wobbly after six months, like a certain bookcase we often wonder will fall on us while we are sleeping.

BRING THE HEAT: Since the sun’s not out, why not pack it in and head for the airport? It’s spring, and the islands are on sale – a one-way ticket to Nassau in The Bahamas is just $148 on US Airways via Orbitz, leaving tomorrow and going via Reagan-National. (Fare found on Kayak, don’t shout at us if it’s gone, thanks in advance..)
