A doctor in central China was suspended after a picture of him smoking while examining went viral on social media.
The unidentified butt puffer was fined about $309, and told to stay off the job for a week, according to the South China Morning News.
The doctor works in a hospital in Maji in Henan province. The clinic prohibits smoking.
“He has also harmed the emotions of our patient and triggered fears among his family,” a hospital rep said.
While the smoking rate in the United States has been declining for years, the tobacco habit is shocking popular in China – where surveys have shown more than half of adult men smoke regularly.
The smoking rate, among all Americans, went down to 14.8 percent last year, according to a CDC report.
