Talk about a lucky dog.
This past Friday night, a French bulldog jumped off of a Lower East Side building, dropped six stories and walked away barely scathed.
On a stroll down Orchard Street, Reddit user Must Be The Mangoes reported hearing “a giant smash alongside a woman shrieking.” The Reddit witness saw a crowd focusing their eyes on a silver Dodge Challenger with a bashed-in sunroof.
“Thirty seconds pass,” the eyewitness wrote on Reddit, “and a panicked woman comes flying down the stairs of an apartment building. [She] climbs onto the hood of the car and pulls the dog out through the sunroof.”
As reported on Reddit, the high-flying pooch was shaken up and salivating but not “visibly bleeding.” If the canine, whose name is Winston, was participating in a precision diving event, he’d have scored a 10.
“He landed perfectly through the sunroof,” wrote Mangoes. “An inch to either side and if could have ended drastically differently.”
The dog’s owner, who posts on Reddit as Heiny And Winst, explained via Reddit that the dog’s plummet was due to a freak turn of events, according to Gothamist.
On the way home from their nightly walk, the owner unhooked Winston’s leash before they headed into the apartment. Then, he unexpectedly tore up to the roof where the access door had been left open.
Heiny And Winst, of course, chased after him up to the dark roof.
“I tried to get him to come to me but he bolted again, towards the front edge of the building,” she posted on Reddit. “I saw him try and slow down at the last second but it was too late and he went over the edge.”
Winston was taken to an animal hospital and put in an oxygen chamber.
Despite a cut and bruising, the dog is on the mend. Heiny And Winst wrote, “It’s an absolute miracle that he is alive right now.”
