A woman named after her mom’s favorite cocktail doesn’t drink alcohol – despite her unique and boozy moniker.
Tequilla Shian Jones, 23, says her mom couldn’t decide between the name Tequila Sunrise – a popular drink made from tequila, orange juice, and grenadine syrup – or Shaylee Shian when she was pregnant.
After her birth, Tequilla says her mom was feeling a little “hazy” so her dad signed the birth papers naming her Tequilla Shian.
Growing up, she said she would often get in trouble with teachers who thought she was making her name up and would be at the butt of classroom jokes – with kids asking if her parents were drunk when they chose her name.

Tequilla Jones / SWNSWhen she was 12 years old, Tequilla decided to go by her middle name ‘Shian’ to stop the bullying.
But, now an adult, Tequilla has decided to embrace her unique name – despite never having a drop of alcohol.
Tequilla, a cosmetologist, from McDonough, Georgia, US, said: “Growing up, I would be taunted for my name.
“I have heard the same jokes over and over again.
“Kids would ask if my parents were alcoholics or if they were drunk naming me.
“It would be different variations of the same joke.
“Now I’m older, I have started embracing my name. I don’t have that middle school taunting anymore.
“I, myself, don’t drink – people find that very funny, that the girl named Tequilla doesn’t drink.”
After her birth, Tequilla says her mom was feeling a little “hazy” so her dad signed the birth papers naming her Tequilla Shian. Tequilla Jones / SWNSWhen Tequilla was born in October 2001, her dad signed the birth documents – merging the couple’s favorite names and adding an extra L to the usual spelling of Tequila.
Tequilla said: “I have asked multiple times in my life about why I am called Tequilla.
“My mom was pregnant a year before they had me and liked the name Tequila, but she gave birth to a boy so she didn’t go with it.
“When my mom was pregnant with me, they were planning between Tequila Sunrise and Shaysee Shian.
“My mom was a little hazy when she gave birth so my dad wrote down Tequilla Shian – it essentially it was a mistake.”

Tequilla Jones / SWNSGrowing up, Tequilla didn’t realise that her name was unique until she was in fifth grade, and she says people started laughing at it.
She said: “In the south, people are around alcohol a lot so people would realize my name.
“When people started noticing my name, it was a little embarrassing.
“I was in fifth and sixth grade and would get in trouble for it with teachers.
“Once I had a teacher tell me that my name was fake, and she had to look at the federal attendance sheet to make sure I wasn’t making it up.
“When we would have a substitute teacher and they said my name, everyone would turn to look at me.”
When Tequilla was 11 she decided to go by her middle name ‘Shian’ instead of Tequilla as she started to hate her first name.
She said: “Growing up I really didn’t like it when I started telling people I wanted to go by Shian, I was very insistent about it.
“Everyone now calls me Shian, I only get called by my first name if I am in trouble.”
Now Tequilla said she has started to love her name again and wants to embrace it.
She has even debated going by her first name rather than her middle name.
Tequilla said: “Now I feel OK with it, I have debated starting to go by it again.
“People tell me that if you take away the meaning it is a really pretty name.
“I feel so much better about my name now as I am much older.
“What can be a little embarrassing is if I am out and someone mentions the word tequila I will turn my head when I hear it.”
