KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Authorities are searching for a man charged in a Kansas City-area homicide after he was mistakenly released from jail.

The Kansas City Star reports that 26-year-old Malcolm Johnson was released Feb. 17 from the Jackson County Detention Center. He was being held on second-degree murder and armed criminal actions charges in the October 2014 shooting death of 22-year-old Monteario Hogan in Raytown.

His release came one day after Jackson County prosecutors dismissed the charges and refiled them in a procedural action.

Prosecutor’s office spokesman Michael Mansur says the office received notice of Johnson’s release on March 3 but did not know why he was released.

The Jackson County Department of Corrections officials said in a statement that an internal investigation is underway and may result in disciplinary action.
