A Canadian man wanted by police for skinny-dipping in a shark-filled aquarium after assaulting a man hours earlier has been arrested, authorities said.
David Weaver, 37, of Nelson, British Columbia, was arrested Tuesday by Ontario Provincial Police in Thunder Bay, four days after he shocked witnesses at Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada by stripping down and jumping into its 766,000-gallon Dangerous Lagoon shark tank, which also houses sea turtles, eels and tropical fish.
Arrangements are now being made to bring Weaver back to Toronto, the Toronto Star reports.
A police spokeswoman told The Post on Tuesday that it was unclear why Weaver tempted fate and jumped into the tank.
Police said Weaver was also wanted in connection to an assault outside a Medieval Times restaurant about two hours before his “big splash” in the shark tank, as one witness recalled.
A man was asked to leave the venue for being disruptive, only to later return and smash two glass doors before approaching a 34-year-old man and assaulting him in what’s believed to be a random attack. The victim was seriously injured, police told the Star.
Weaver then fled the scene and reemerged at the aquarium hours later before getting completely naked and hopping into the shark tank, according to police and video footage of the incident. He’s now facing charges of assault causing bodily harm and mischief interfere with property, police said.
One witness told CBC News she heard a “big splash” during her visit to the aquarium and thought trainers were preparing to feed the sharks. She then spotted a man inside, seemingly “totally relaxed,” she said.
“He appeared to be totally nude and, like, laughing,” Erinn Acland said. “I don’t know what would possess someone to do that. It’s totally insane to me. I was scared I was going to witness the death of this guy.”
