In a horrifying freak accident, a toddler nearly lost her fingers last week after trapping her hand in the bottom of an escalator at a shopping center in El Salvador.

In a harrowing video clip obtained by Jam Press, the unidentified 2-year-old can be seen being comforted by her mom as her hand is stuck in the jagged guard of the escalator.

Technicians work to free the girl’s fingers. Thankfully, they were able to pause the escalator’s movement to save her hand.

The incident happened Sept. 5 at the Plaza Mundo shopping center in Apopa, El Salvador.

The curious little girl placed her hand under the guard while her mom was distracted, Jam Press reported.

After her hand was freed, the girl was rushed to the hospital, where doctors performed surgery to save her fingers.

During the successful operation, doctors were able to ensure there wouldn’t be risk of re-injury to her hand and fingers.

The girl is reported to be OK and was discharged from the hospital the following day.

To maintain normal use of her hand, she will have to undergo rehabilitation.

The video of the shocking episode was posted to social media, where many praised the technicians and doctors who saved the little girl’s hand.

“Excellent work,” one local wrote.

Another agreed, typing, “As always, science works wonders.”

“God bless that little girl,” someone else chimed in.

This isn’t the only escalator mishap this summer.

In June, 14 people were injured when an escalator at a South Korean subway station suddenly reversed direction.

In the scary security camera footage, the sudden shift sent riders plummeting down the moving staircase and into a human pile at the end of the escalator.

One person could even be seen getting thrown to an adjacent escalator.

Three people were hospitalized with serious injuries to the back and legs, while 11 others were treated for minor injuries at the time.
