A Connecticut landscaper ran over a metal spike with his lawn mower and it catapulted into a passing SUV, shattering the back window — and landing just inches from two small children, according to a report Tuesday.

The kids, ages 2 and 3, narrowly escaped the 10-inch spike in Fairfield on Saturday when it was sucked up by the rotating blades of a commercial lawn mower and propelled 20 feet into the family’s Honda Pilot, according to ABC 7.

“It is absolutely terrifying,” Vanessa Desantis, a neighbor who saw the incident, told the station. “It was just a horrible chain of events.”

The freak accident broke the back window of the SUV, ricocheted off the interior glass on the opposite side and landed between the two kids, who were strapped into car seats, the station reported.

The children suffered minor cuts from the broken glass, authorities said.

“A matter of inches one way or the other, it could have been a much different story,” said Lt. Robert Smith of the Fairfield Fire Department.

The father driving the SUV declined to comment — but the Fairfield Fire Department posted stunning photos of his shattered window on Facebook.

Investigators said the landscaper immediately stopped mowing and stayed at the scene. It wasn’t immediately clear if he would be charged with a crime.
