Good dog! An Ohio couple adopted a Saint Bernard from the pound to save him from being euthanized, and within hours he thanked them by saving their home from being burglarized.

Rubert Littler, of Hillsboro, was taking Hercules out when the 135-pound dog started growling. A man raced out of the basement, and the dog chased after him, biting his ankle. The burglar got away.

Ukrainian cops have detained three men who they say put a new spin on the term “highway robbery” — by swiping goods from trucks as they drove.

Using a car with a “specially reinforced hood,’’ they would drive up behind a moving truck, police said. One would stand on the car’s hood and use bolt cutters to open the truck’s locks, get in and grab the loot, the cops said.

It was a sudsy sting. In an effort to bring in fugitive suspects, British cops in Derbyshire offered them a free case of beer — they just had to pick it up.

Incredibly, 19 showed up.

The brew-bust tactic “has been very cost effective,’’ said Chief Inspector Graham McLaughlin.

Talk about a mountain of homework. About three dozen high-school students in Pili, in China’s northern Xinjiang Uygur region, have to make their way across a pass 1,500 feet above a sheer drop to get to school.

“It’s very steep, but we’re mountain people here and used to walking like this,’’ said one teacher, who jokingly added: “We haven’t lost one yet. There are severe penalties for truancy.’’

For students at another school in China, it’s not all fun and games on the playground. Officials at Sihuang Middle School in Wuhan cracked down on cheating by having pupils take exams on the outdoor playground.

The teachers sit on higher ground and have a good view of the students seated at desks lined up in rows with a lot of space between them.
